Safety and Essential Equipment for Kids Martial Arts
Safety is not a promise — it is a standard you can inspect. Before your child trains, you deserve to know what gear is used and which rules apply.
Essential Equipment
- Gloves sized for the child, not for an adult.
- Shin guards for partner kicking drills.
- Headgear and mouthguard once light sparring begins.
- Body protector for controlled contact work.
- Fitted training clothes and a personal water bottle.
For early sessions many items can be borrowed at the venue so parents do not buy the wrong size.
Contact Rules for Kids Classes
- No hard contact in the first six sessions.
- Sparring only after coaches judge basics ready.
- Supervision ratios are stricter during sparring than in normal drills.
- Stop on the whistle — immediately, every time.
- Every incident is logged for review, never hidden.
How to Check for Yourself in Five Minutes
- Look at the mats: thick, clean, no holes, not slippery.
- Ask for the first-aid kit and confirm coaches know how to use it.
- Check exits are clear and there is enough floor space.
- Watch whether children wear protection during partner work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Must my child own gear?
Recommended for hygiene and comfort, especially gloves and mouthguard. Larger items can be borrowed first.
What if my child falls and cries?
The coach checks the child, allows calm-down time, then reintroduces the activity safely. Crying is not failure — it is part of learning.
